How long does it take?
There is no fixed timeline for getting a driving licence in Norway – it depends on your starting experience, how much you practice and how quickly you progress through the mandatory training steps.
Minimum time
The absolute minimum is around 2–4 weeks if you do an intensive course (intensivkurs). These courses compress all mandatory training into a short period. However, they are expensive and not suitable for everyone.
Typical timeline
For most people following a standard training path, expect:
Key milestones and age requirements
| Milestone | Minimum age |
|-----------|------------|
| Basic Traffic Course | 15 years |
| Start practice driving | 16 years |
| Theory test | 17.5 years |
| Practical driving test | 18 years |
If you start at 15 and practice consistently, you can theoretically be ready for the practical test the day you turn 18.
What affects the timeline?
How much you practice privately – this is the biggest factor. The more kilometres you drive with a qualified companion, the faster you build experience and reduce the number of paid lessons you need.
Night driving timing – the night driving component of the Basic Traffic Course can only be done between October and March. If you start in spring or summer, you will need to wait for this element.
Waiting times – popular driving schools can have waiting lists for mandatory courses. The practical driving test can also have waiting times at busy traffic stations.
Your natural pace – everyone learns differently. Some people need more time than others and that is perfectly fine.
