Norwegian driving licence categories

Norway follows the European driving licence system. Here is an overview of the main categories and what you can drive with each one.

Category B – Passenger car

  • Minimum age: 18 years
  • Vehicles: Passenger cars up to 3,500 kg
  • Also allows: Mopeds (AM), tractors up to 3,500 kg
  • This is the most common licence category. With Category B you can also tow a trailer up to 750 kg, or heavier trailers as long as the combined weight does not exceed 3,500 kg.

    Category BE – Car with heavy trailer

  • Minimum age: 18 years (requires Category B)
  • Vehicles: Car with trailer where combined weight exceeds 3,500 kg
  • No theory test required if you already have Category B
  • Category B96

    A sub-category of B that allows combinations up to 4,250 kg. Requires a short mandatory course but no new driving test.

    Category A – Motorcycle

  • Minimum age: 24 years direct, or 20 years after 2 years with A2
  • Vehicles: All motorcycles without restriction
  • Category A2 – Medium motorcycle

  • Minimum age: 18 years
  • Vehicles: Motorcycles up to 35 kW
  • Category A1 – Light motorcycle

  • Minimum age: 16 years
  • Vehicles: Motorcycles up to 125cc and 11 kW
  • Category AM – Moped

  • Minimum age: 16 years (AM146) or 18 years (AM147 moped car)
  • Vehicles: Mopeds up to 45 km/h
  • Note: If you have Category B, you already have the right to ride mopeds
  • Category C – Lorry

  • Minimum age: 21 years (or 18 with professional driver qualification)
  • Vehicles: Lorries over 7,500 kg
  • Category C1 – Light lorry

  • Minimum age: 18 years
  • Vehicles: Vehicles between 3,500 and 7,500 kg
  • Category D – Bus

  • Minimum age: 24 years (or 21 with professional driver qualification)
  • Vehicles: Buses with more than 8 passenger seats
  • Category T – Tractor

  • Minimum age: 16 years
  • Vehicles: Tractors and motorised equipment
  • Note: Only valid in Norway
  • Category S – Snowmobile

  • Minimum age: 16 years
  • Vehicles: Open snowmobiles with or without trailer sledge
  • Note: Valid in Norway and Sweden only
  • Final test: Theory test only, no practical driving test
