  • How to prepare

    Official practice tests

Statens vegvesen offers free official practice tests on their website (vegvesen.no). These are in the same format as the real test and are the best preparation tool available.

    Theory book

The official theory book for Category B is called "Bil" and is published by the Authorized Driving Schools Association (ATL). It covers all test topics and is available in Norwegian. For English speakers, the practice tests online are often more useful.

    Apps and websites

Several apps offer Norwegian theory test practice:

  • Statens vegvesen official app
  • Teoritentamen.no – large question database
  • Various other driving theory apps
  • Tips for English speakers

  • Use the English language option on the official practice tests
  • Focus on Norwegian-specific rules that may differ from your home country
  • Pay special attention to right-of-way rules – these are a common failure point
  • Road signs are largely international, but some Norwegian-specific signs are tested
  • On the day

  • Bring valid photo ID
  • Select your preferred language at the start of the test
  • Read each question carefully before answering
  • If unsure, think about what the safest option would be
  • Do not spend too long on one difficult question – move on and return
  • What happens if you fail?

You must wait 2 weeks before retaking the test and pay the fee again. You will be told which topics you answered incorrectly, but not the exact questions. Use this information to focus your preparation before the next attempt.
